Tools
The tools the Paperful MCP server gives to AI assistants.
Tools are the actions an assistant can take in Paperful. You don't call them yourself: the assistant decides which ones to use based on what you ask.
All tools are read-only and only see papers in the workspace you connected.
| Tool | Description | Permission |
|---|---|---|
search | Search the content of every paper. | Read papers |
list_papers | List and filter papers. | Read papers |
read_paper | Read a paper in full. | Read papers |
whoami | Show the connected account and workspace. | None |

See Ask your papers and Cite sources for more examples.
list_papers
Lists the papers in your workspace, newest first.
Prop
Type
Each paper includes its ID, title, file name, page count, size, status and creation date.
Try asking:
Which PDFs did I upload this week?

Returns the full content of a paper as Markdown. The assistant gets paper IDs from search or list_papers.

Very long papers are cut off after 200,000 characters so they don't overflow the assistant's context. For long documents, search is often the better choice.
Try asking:
Summarize the 2026 annual report.
whoami
Returns the Paperful account and workspace the connection uses, and the permissions it was granted. Takes no input.
Try asking:
Which Paperful workspace are you connected to?
